Sample Overload!

The other day, I decided I just had to do a little purge of my sample stash. Is it just me, or does a good sample or promo code entice you to buy something you don't need off of your never ending wishlist?

I've definitely gotten better over the years, but I can't seem to keep up with all the samples. I do regularly clear out samples and give them away, but I realized that I needed to do it more. Really, at what point am I going to finish all that full size skincare and desperately need to rifle through some samples? Sure, I'm going to use some here and there, but wouldn't I be better off finding someone who will actually USE up these samples?

So, I dug around and decided to ditch all of this stuff. Yay.

samples

After a bit of a chat with Gummy, who is the queen of purging, and Julie applauding me on my efforts, I thought I would share some tips that help me edit my collection, sample or full size!

Start with Color
So many samples seem to come in only one shade, and we all know that they don't work for everyone. Don't let those samples in the wrong shade sit around the house forever! Do a bit of Googling to see if the shade might work, and if not, add it to the toss pile! Easy peasy, and now you're well on your way!

Test Scents & Textures
It is a bit more difficult to determine if you like a product's scent or texture, but for the most part I can tell from swatching or at least one use if I like how a product smells or feels. Listen to your instincts and dump the stuff that has too much scent or doesn't have the texture you're looking for.

Study The Ingredients
Next, I'll take a look at the ingredients. Perhaps it makes more sense to do this first, especially if you have ingredient concerns, but I'm weird and never think of this first!

Consider Expiration Dates
It pains me to think of how much money I've spent on a product (or how much I've spent to get a sample!), so when I remind myself that these things won't last forever, I'm always encouraged to find them new homes. Think of what you're currently using in your routine, when you'll be done with that, and how likely you are to pick up that sample next. When I realize it may not be a year or two before I finally decide to use that sample size mascara, I definitely reconsider keeping it!

Oh, and in case you're wondering, those samples in pots that you can have made at counters definitely dry out... Who knew! (Kidding!)

Be a Friend!
And last but not least, if I can't seem to let go, I think of my friends. My best friend might like this lipstick way more than I do, or my coworker could really use every last drop of all those moisturizer samples before they need to spend on high end skincare... You get the idea. I always manage to get rid of more if I'm trying to put together goodies for someone else!

I hate to admit that all those samples I'm getting rid of hardly make a dent in my sample collection... But hey, you have to start somewhere, right? I hope these tips are helpful for you, and I'd love to know how you edit and purge your stash! :)

A Primer & Foundation Duo

I don't know about you, but I seem to collect SO many deluxe samples of primers, and surprisingly of foundations too. A few weeks back, this duo was pretty well used over here, so I thought it was time for me to share it with you!

Illamasqua Hydra Veil
When this first came out, there was tons of hype and I didn't really know what the big deal was. A hydrating primer? Why would I need that, I thought, if I could just moisturize? Now that I've finally tried it though, I can understand. My dry skin soaks this up!

From a priming perspective, I do feel like this helps the Buxom foundation go on smoother with better coverage. In terms of longevity, I do find that it helps my foundation last at least 8 hours. I also think the texture of this primer is unique - it is almost like jelly, which was a bit strange at first, but once you get used to it, it actually feels pretty nice on the skin!

Buxom Show Some Skin Weightless Foundation in Meet Me Latte
I saw a video on Sephora's Youtube channel (here) and it looked right up my alley. This formula is light - I would say comparable to a tinted moisturizer. However, it is buildable to get a little coverage, though I find I use more of this to get slightly less coverage than I would use of the Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation or Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer.

Shade wise, this foundation is described on Sephora.com as a "neutral beige for medium skin tones" and I would say this is accurate. It is not too pink or too yellow, though it is just a bit darker than my skintone this spring. (I suspect that one shade down, You're A Natural, would be more appropriate for me.)

It wears well, and despite having to use more than I normally would, this foundation never becomes cakey or anything. The finish is completely natural and glowy (in a good way!), so I would definitely recommend this to tinted moisturizer fans who didn't get along with Nars because of skin type, etc.

I'm excited to use the Buxom foundation this summer, though I don't plan to purchase it when I finish it. I definitely think I'll pick up the Illamasqua once I finish up this little tube, as I suspect I could use any extra moisture each winter. What do you think of my little primer and foundation duo? Have you tried either of these products, or have a favorite duo of your own? I'd love to know!

Spirit Beauty Lounge Sampler

Ages ago, Taylor told me about the custom samples you could order from Spirit Beauty Lounge. For $25 including shipping to the US or internationally, you can pick from most of their selection of natural brands. Plus you get a $5 code towards a $40 full size purchase!

spirit beauty sample kit review

Last month, I finally filled a cart with some skincare, RMS, and Kjaer Weis samples! They arrive in a nice little drawstring pouch with neatly labeled sample pots, and it is definitely worthwhile to get my hands on these samples of products that are difficult to see in person. I thought I'd share what I think about them!

Kjaer Weis Cream Blush in Joyful, $54 or $26 for refill
Joyful is described as a warm coral, and I have to say that this is just a lovely shade for my skintone. I think it would be quite pretty for summer, and the formula is quite creamy.
Purchase? Maybe. A bit pricey to buy the compact version, so I'll consider it as I use up this sample!

Pai Rosehip Bio Regenerate Oil, $35
This oil is way more affordable than I originally thought, and on my face it smells a bit like nuts to me. (Pistachios maybe?) It is meant to reduce pigmentation, sun damage or scarring, and also keep skin firm. It keeps my skin decently hydrated as well, and absorbs quickly!
Purchase?: Yes, eventually. I'd love to give this a try long term to see if I can get any notable results. Time to use up some more skincare first though!

Kjaer Weis Eyeshadow in Onyx, $44 or $22 for refill
This pretty black shimmery eyeshadow shade is in loose powder form for this sample, but seems to be a nice, softly textured powder eyeshadow. It seems to wear just fine on my eyelids, but I don't really have anything notable to say about it. Seems like just a nice eyeshadow!
Purchase?: Not this shade, but maybe the shade Wisdom, which is more of a pretty light brown. Again, it is pricey to buy the packaging with it!

May Lindstrom Skin The Clean Dirt, $60
I have read so many good reviews of this stuff since I made my sample order, and I have to say that I suspect all the reviews are right! It is sort of fun to mix this into water or cleanser, and it provides my skin with a really gentle exfoliation. It also smells like pie crust or graham cracker crumble, which I surprisingly love!
Purchase?: YES! But going to try and hold off until I use up some skincare.

RMS Beauty Living Luminizer, $38
This is a hit item from RMS, and I can see why. It provides your face with quite a nice bit of highlight, but I find the product scent to be a little bothersome for me. Similar to their Un-Cover Up, it just has a scent that I don't love. (Sort of natural balm product + coconut in scent.) The highlighter also has a bit of a metallic finish, in a good way though, and I've determined I prefer my Jouer highlighter for texture and finish.
Purchase?: No.

Strange Invisible Aquarian Roses Perfume, $195
I'm pretty picky with perfumes, so I'm not sure what possesed me to add this to my sample kit. Perhaps it was the thought of a rose + sandalwood perfume that was organic, vegan AND cruelty free. :) It smells clean and fresh with a hint of rose, and I have to say I am enjoying wearing it! It just smells better as the day goes on!
Purchase?: Someday. It is really nice and different, but I am ignoring very pricey perfumes for a while. Maybe in like 5 years haha!

RMS Beauty Cream Eyeshadow in Magnetic, $28
I love cream eyeshadow, and had always wanted to try this taupey, purpley toned eyeshadow. The color can be layered for more punch, and I think the shade is so pretty! Unfortunately, this eyeshadow just does not stay on my lids. I'm serious, I swear it creases in half an hour and is nearly gone in about 2 hours. SAD!
Purchase?: No.

RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek in Rapture, $36
This is such a gorgeous brown toned red, and I absolutely love the creamy texture of this. It seriously is a lip and cheek product - it doesn't make my lips feel dry, and it blends in beautifully on my cheeks. Also, I don't have scent issues with this. Yay!
Purchase?: Yes, but I am not sure if I would decide on another shade.

RMS Beauty Buriti Bronzer, $28
I love the creamy texture of this slightly shimmery bronzer. It brings a bit of glow to your skin, rather than shimmer, and while it is warm in tone, it is more brown than orange. It wears well on me, and is a great (warm) contour on my cheeks too. I can see why so many bloggers love it!
Purchase?: Maybe, if I still feel the same way once I finish this little sample!

All in all, I really enjoyed this sampler. A chance to try a lot of products on my wishlist without committing to a full size? I'm in! Plus, they last quite a few uses, which is quite perfect for me, especially when it comes to the makeup items which probably would take me a while to use up given my lack of makeup wearing. I'm also happy to determine a few items I don't need to buy. (Phew!)

FYI, for Chicago area gals, Space 519 in the 900 shops on Michigan Avenue carries Strange Invisible, RMS Beauty and Kjaer Weis, among other lovely brands! :)

What do you think of my sample picks from Spirit Beauty Lounge? Do any of these products catch your eye? :)

Foundation Sampling: RBR & YSL

Last week, my Beautyhabit order arrived with my requested sample of Rouge Bunny Rouge Milk Aquarelle foundation, and then when I was returning a pair of boots at Nordstrom, I just thought to take a peek at the much hyped YSL Youth Liberator Serum Foundation.

Rouge Bunny Rouge Milk Aquarelle Foundation review, YSL Youth Liberator Serum Foundation review

I haven't used up these samples and I'm sure I could test them more thoroughly, but I may have already come to a conclusion about them. Read on to see what I thought!

Rouge Bunny Rouge Milk Aquarelle Foundation in Chestnut Milk Parfait
I selected this shade to sample based on swatches online, and on my arm it looks quite light! My cheeks, however, are quite pale, and this matches pretty well to them. Unfortunately, the rest of my face is a bit darker, and I generally prefer to put a bit darker foundation on my cheeks to match the rest of my face (and my neck!) I imagine this could work better for me once I get to my palest winter skin, even though it isn't a perfect match.

Shade aside, I do think the formula of this foundation is interesting. (And I was drawn in by all the dreamy RBR descriptions on their site, haha!) The foundation has a light scent, almost citrus, and it has a silicone-y feel to it. It does apply quite smoothly, and has sheer to light coverage. If I had to rate this for covering redness, I would give it just one less point than Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation, which works really well for me at covering my minor redness. I'd say that is a pretty good score! This is definitely the type of natural finish foundation that I love, and I definitely need to check out a darker shade. Now I just have to figure out which shade would fit me better, as I would love to test this one out more!

YSL Youth Liberator Serum Foundation in BD50
Serum seems to be an appropriate addition to this foundation's fancy name. It leaves my skin looking dewy, and perhaps a bit more hydrated as well. One of the British bloggers described this as a dewier version of Armani Luminous Silk, and I do have to say I agree. The coverage is definitely medium (or as the YSL counter manager told me, medium to heavy) and it does a fair job creating a dewy, even complexion.

The shade that I was matched to even seems to be a decent match, though if I was being nit-picky, perhaps not quite as yellow as I would normally prefer. Unfortunately, the foundation does have a floral scent, and it may be a bit too strong for my taste. While the scent dissipates, scented foundations are generally not for me. Even if the scent isn't strong, I never want to apply them in the morning, as most fragrances on me make me nauseous at that time of day! So sadly, this is a skip for me.

What do you think about these two foundations? Have you tried them? How did they work out for you? I'd love to know!
