Bite Beauty Lip Lab: Custom Lipstick Experience

When I was in NYC, I was itching to visit the Bite Beauty Lip Lab in Soho. I was desperate to custom blend my own lipstick, even if I wasn't sure what color I even wanted!

They don't take appointments, so going on a weekend might be kind of iffy. I first visited the shop on a Sunday afternoon an hour before they closed, and I wasn't able to sit down for a custom lipstick. However, when I visited around 3pm on a Wednesday, the shop was empty and we were able to get to work!

Bite Custom Lipstick Options: Matte, Luminous Creme, Sheer, & Creme Deluxe

First, the friendly SA and I discussed what sort of color I was looking for (an everyday pink) and then she showed me the lipstick formulas that were available. In the photo above, you can see the same shade in the four different options available. Matte, Luminous Creme (which is the formula sold at Sephora), Sheer, and Creme Deluxe. The first three formulas are $36, while the Creme Deluxe formula is $48. I chose Creme Deluxe because I loved how thick and smooth it felt going on, and it seemed to be the most moisturizing. The SA confirmed that it was their most moisturizing and long wearing formula!

Once I decided on my formula, it was time to get mixing! The SA and I both picked out some shade options to play with, which you can see opened and lined up in the photos above. (Click to enlarge)

I have to say that the outcome really depends on how well you can describe what you want. The SA first mixed up a peachy pink nude, and I quite liked the shade. I wanted to try on something with a bit more pink, so the middle mixture was born. In the end, "the one" was a shade in between the two mixtures.

This whole decision process took about 15-20 minutes for us to complete, though I can imagine if you had a lot of questions or were very unsure about your shade it could take longer. (During my first visit, there was a group of women who seemed very uncertain about what shades they wanted.) I have to say the SA I worked with seemed very knowledgeable about mixing shades even based on my poor descriptions. :)

Then it was time to choose a flavor! There were so many varieties to choose from, but I tried to make a quick decision and landed on Mint. The other choices I was deciding on were Wild Berry and Citrus Mango, and there were options like Mango, Violet, Vanilla and Cherry.

Naming lipstick & choosing a lid shape!

As the SA was making my lipstick, which took just under 10 minutes, I was given the option to name my new lipstick and pick a fun design for the lid! I thought it was cute that the lid options were various lipstick shapes - I once read a fun article about what your lipstick shade says about you - and I picked the shape that most of my lipsticks seem to end up in! Here's a shot of what I ended up with! You may have seen this photo in my recent post about my NYC beauty purchases, but I thought I'd share again. I love how they write out your lipstick recipe so you can have it made again! Plus the SA ended up making extra by accident, so she put it in a little pot for me and threw in some cool little samples too!

All in all, I think it was a lot of fun - I wish my friends were able to come with me! I think if I lived there, I would be making colors all the time! What do you think about my Bite Beauty custom lipstick experience? Is this something that you would want to do? :)

2014 Beauty Resolutions

Happy New Year!! I hope you guys spent your evening celebrating exactly the way you wanted to. Did anything exciting happen on your New Year's Eve?

In any event, I've spent a lot of time thinking about my beauty resolutions for 2014. I never make any resolutions in regular life, but I seem to LOVE making them for beauty related things. :D Here goes!

Forget no buys - 2014 is the year of the empties.
As I’ve attempted to do a low buy for much of 2013, I’ve also thought long and hard about my never-ending need to buy, and my hardly touched collection. I’m a collector (hoarder) at heart, so this behavior is only natural. And, as many of you have so eloquently put it before, beauty is my hobby and I am generally careful with my spending everywhere else. I’ve realized that I’m perfectly content with my collection, growing or not, and my real issue is that I seem to finish so little. So, 2014 is definitely the year of empties, and if I manage to buy less, I’m happy with that too!

Get tough and be strict about a one in one out policy.
In the effort to be a less wasteful consumer, I will commit to clearing something out before buying something new. So, before I buy another eyeshadow/lipstick/whatever product that I "must have," I must finish/give away/sell one I already have. Oy!

Finish all the things before buying more!
Okay, maybe not all the things. But really, as many things as I can. So before buying anything in the following categories, I should use up or otherwise get rid of all my full sizes and samples when it comes to skincare, haircare, mascara, eyeliner, and primers.

And last but not least, keep using my app discoveries (Lift & Plant Nanny) to keep up with good makeup habits and drinking lots of water! Have you made any resolutions for 2014? Do you have tips for keeping up with them? I'd love to know! :)

Diptyque Pine Bark Dupes?

A few weeks ago, I purchased a mini candle from Diptyque's holiday collection and proceeded to fall in love with it. The candle in question was the limited edition Pine Bark (otherwise known as Ecorce de Pin) and I knew almost immediately that I had found a new favorite.

This candle just smells absolutely beautiful - a fresh Christmas tree that is just perfect for the season. Diptyque always manages to do complex scents, and I quite like to describe this one as "Christmas tree in my pretty smelling fancy house." Haha!

Now I know not everyone can splurge on a Diptyque candle - I can barely bring myself to buy them without a good promo - so I went on the hunt for wallet friendly alternatives. Plus, we all need something for when the limited edition Diptyque Pine Bark is no longer available... So here goes!

First up are two very affordable options from Bath & Body Works. Available in a variety of sizes (mini, medium, mason jar, and 3-wick) there is always a sale going for their candles that make these extra affordable. I got both of these for $10 during a sale last week!

Fresh Balsam smells like a fresh tree, and smells most like Diptyque Pine Bark in the jar. While the Diptyque disperses scent quite well almost immediately, this one does take a bit of time for the scent to emerge. It is not as complex, but I quite like the Christmas tree aroma. Evergreen, on the other hand, smells like a pine tree with a bit of fire and sweetness. I find this scent to be a bit artificial, but less so than other Bath & Body Works scents. Like Fresh Balsam, it takes quite some time for the scent to disperse around the room.

My picks are a pair of candles I picked up at Anthropologie, Capri Blue Fir & Firewood and Good Nature Balsam Cedar. While pretty different from Diptyque Pine Bark, they are pretty stellar picks in my book. They offer a sophisticated and complex aroma at a much more reasonable price, and Aspen Bay's Capri Blue candles are probably my favorites in terms of burn time, quality, and overall value for money. (Their Volcano candle has been a favorite for years!)

Capri Blue Fir & Firewood and Good Nature Balsam Cedar both have a mix of pine, wood, and fiery aromas. It is hard to describe their scents, but I love them both. Even if they don't smell like Diptyque Pine Bark, they definitely give off a similar feel. All in all, I don't think any of these measure up to Diptyque, but they are reasonable replacements to give you the same general feel.

Have you tried Diptyque Pine Bark or any of these possible dupes? Would you splurge on Diptyque or choose one of these more affordable options? I'd love to know!

P.S. I am contemplating doing a similar post on dupes for DIptyque Feu de Bois. Let me know if I should!
